Fear of flying: straight answers
Can turbulence make a plane crash?
No. Turbulence is a comfort issue. Airliners are built for forces far bigger than any turbulence, and injuries happen to people who are not wearing a seat belt.
What if an engine fails?
Airliners fly safely on one engine. Pilots practise it twice a year in simulators, and takeoffs are planned assuming an engine could fail.
What if both engines stop?
It is extremely rare. A plane without engine power glides for many miles and the pilots are trained to fly and land it.
Is a hard landing dangerous?
No. A firm landing is often a deliberate one, because it puts the plane on the runway for good braking. The landing gear is built for it.
Can lightning hit a plane?
It happens quite often. Planes are built so that lightning travels around the outside and leaves again. Passengers usually notice only a flash and a bang.
Why does the plane tilt?
To turn, a plane tilts gently like a bicycle leaning into a corner. It is designed to do this and the seat feels steady.
